I met with Field Agent Paul Goldsmith summer of 2008 (for service on my policy)... and he talked to me about
becoming a field agent… I contacted Chad (Lueken) I believe a couple of weeks later. We met for a couple of hours.
Afterwards I felt it wasn't the right time for me to leave the radio station.
In April of 2010 I quit my job at the radio station. I was in radio for 12 years and at that station for the past 5 years.
I contacted Chad in May of 2010. The interview process was pretty easy. Chad wanted to get to know me, my
background, my family. I understood he wanted to make sure I was a good fit for his agency. My wife Abbe had a lot
of questions as well during the spousal interview. She wanted to make sure it was a right fit for me as well.
What was your training like?
In June and July of 2010 I spent that time studying for my Life exam. The Life exam was tough. I eventually passed
it. During those two months I also went on joint field work with Paul Goldsmith. It was interesting being on the other
side of the table… seeing the need for that family and trying to figure out ways to get the coverage they needed. The
pre-contract things that needed to be done for the Knights wasn't as difficult as I thought. It's all about time
management.
I was contracted August 1, 2010. My first official day was Monday, August 2nd and I attended a team meeting. We
talked about some case studies and shared different ideas. Most of it was over my head. I did recognize some things
from my studies.
I like the way Chad had trained me. He introduced things to me slowly. He didn't throw a bunch of stuff at me and
say "remember this". I've been able to go back to members I already met and used some of the things I learned from
the field agent school, Chad and my brother agents.
Any advice for new agents or prospective agent candidates?
I wasn't sure what to expect from the Home Office field agent school. For me what I took away from it was all the
different ideas the other agents were using… In school I didn't ask that many questions… during the classes but I
talked with the other agents after hours and seemed things seemed to make more sense to me. I can't stress enough
the importance of talking with other agents. Find out what makes them so successful and copy that.
The K of C has helped me re-educate myself on the Catholic faith. I'm paying more attention to what I read in the
Columbian magazine, etc.
If you are considering a career as a Field Agent in the Knights of Columbus don't think of it as just selling life
insurance. Think of it as a way to re-connect with your faith. The hours are nice, the money is great. You can be your
own boss and still enjoy the things you like to do.
Keep your mind open and you too can enjoy a great career with the Knights of Columbus.
