Long Term Care?
What will the Golden Years hold for you and your wife?
No one can ever predict, with complete certainty, just what the
future will hold. And yet, one of the great legacies of the last
century was a dramatic increase in life expectancy. In fact,
many of us can expect to live longer than at any time in human
history. So, in terms of quantity, our lives have changed for the
better.

For that we can thank major advancements in medicine the eradication of illnesses that were cocommon
services.
That's the good news. The bad news is that too many people are not prepared financially to live long
lives. In particular, the cost of long-term, custodial care — whether at home or in a nursing facility —
can lay waste to even the best of retirement plans. And government programs aren’t designed to fill the
gap.
So, even though life expectancies have improved in terms of quantity, the quality of life for some
individuals can be diminished during one’s later years. Knights of Columbus Care can help you cope
with the cost of long-term custodial care — while maintaining your dignity and choice of care options. It’
s a great addition to the K of C’s portfolio of insurance programs.
The Knights of Columbus was founded over a century ago with an important mission: to protect
members and their families from economic hardship. Today, we’re one of the largest organizations of
lay Catholics in the world — and one of the strongest life insurers in North America. Generations upon
generations of Catholic families have benefited from our life insurance and annuity plans.
Just as K of C life insurance has protected the financial security of thousands of families, Knights of
Columbus Care protects you and your wife in your “Golden Years.” Working with your K of C agent
you can design a long-term care plan that will meet your needs tomorrow.., and fit your budget today.
Preserve your financial independence with Knights of Columbus Care.
An inescapable fact of life: we’re all getting older. Record numbers of people are living well into their
80s, 90s. . .and even past the age of 100. That translates into more time to do the things you want to do,
to spend time with the people you love. It also poses new challenges.
In aging, you change in some familiar ways — and some ways that might be completely unexpected. In
your 60s and 70s, tasks and activities that you once performed routinely or with ease might become
increasingly difficult. And, over time, you may need more and more assistance with such activities. You
might also experience a sudden, acute need for such help after a debilitating illness — such as stroke.
A study conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine predicted that, for people who turned 65 in
1990, 43 percent will spend some time in a nursing home; 55 percent will stay at least a year and 21
percent will stay at least five years.1 On average, private nursing home care can cost upwards of
$74,000 per year. You may be able to manage with at-home nursing care. Yet this option, too can be
quite expensive: such services can cost over $55,480 per year in the U.S. for eight hours of service, 36
a year.
These figures can be expected to increase over time. As you grow older, the risk that you will need care
increases. Since people on average are living longer, all of us face an increased likelihood that we’ll be
candidates for care service.
Are you prepared for the cost of long term care – whether in a nursing home or in your own home? Will
your loved ones be in a position to assist you – and if so, would you want them to? Today, many middle-
aged people must provide assistance to elderly, infirm parents just when they’re ready to send their own
children off to college. Experts call this the “sandwich generation.”
Fortunately, if you’re a Knights of Columbus member, you have a great organization on your side. With
Knights of Columbus Care, you’re assured of meeting your needs without depleting your retirement
resources.. .or disposing of your assets in order to qualify for public assistance. Most importantly, you
can do this without becoming a financial burden on your children — a burden that can create tension
even in the most loving of families.
Our long-term care insurance plan is designed with you in mind. In most places you can choose a
comprehensive plan that covers care in a nursing-home setting, an assisted-living facility, or at home.
Or you can opt for facility-only coverage. In either plan, you tailor the benefits — and your out-of-
pocket premium cost — to a level that meets your needs and budget. And when you become a Knights of
Columbus Care policyholder, you benefit from the same financial strength that has earned us the top
marks of the two leading insurance-rating services in North America: A.M. Best and Standard & Poor’s.
